THE SITE
Situated in the heart of the region known as Périgord Noir or
Black Périgord, the castle of Lacoste offers its occupants an
exceptional panoramic view over the Dordogne valley and that of its
tributary river, the Céou…
In its romantic environment, serenity touches the soul of the visitor…
THE PROMONTORY
The castle with its grounds, its gardens and its infinity swimming-pool :
On the castle site, you will benefit from an environment which will
surround you with calm and serenity. Indeed, once inside the gate to
the grounds, no other access being possible you will be able to enjoy a
total space of 5 hectares, on which you have the castle and its
esplanades, its box-tree and rose garden along with its vegetable
garden, and finally the grounds with their paths and drives which will
allow you to discover our marvellous périgourdine scenery.
At about 100 metres from the castle, you can enjoy the use of the
infinity swimming-pool, located inside the grounds behind the castle.
There is a pool house, completely equipped with shower and toilets,
kitchenette and barbecue to prepare food, if you so wish.

History of the castle
Today, the only 18th century castle among fortified castles, it has developed and changed in the course of time.
While Jean de Bessou, lord of the lands of Lacoste warred with the Lord
of Castelnaud, the castle was merely a hideout allowing defence during
the Hundred Years’ War against the lord of Beynac.
Castelnaud
was English and Protestant. Beynac was French and Catholic. The family
prospered and Jacques de Bessou made a rich match in marrying Françoise
de Maleville. He carried out improvements, transforming the castle
until the French Revolution when the The Bessou family went into exile
and was never able to reclaim the castle because it had been bought by
Guillaume Sarlat, nephew of Madame de Maleville and mayor of Castelnaud.
Guillaume Sarlat never wanted to give the castle back to his cousin,
although the latter took the case to court. Sarlat’s descendants sold
the castle to the present owners in the 19th century.
The great-grandmother of the present owner carried out significant
improvements which allow us to admire the present-day castle and
grounds.
